HISTORY

A Brief History

The Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus was organized in 1999 as Caballeros, a community chorus of 24 men. It debuted as a guest ensemble for the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles. The chorus sang four songs and received an enthusiastic welcome from the desert community. In 2013, the name was changed to more clearly identify the Chorus to Palm Springs, California, our home.

Though the name changed, the mission of the chorus remains the same: To be a chorus of gay men, who through musical excellence, community outreach, and civic responsibility, are dedicated to entertaining, inspiring, and educating the culturally diverse community in which we live.

Beyond our annual season of three concerts, the Chorus sponsors or participates in a number of community-based projects with other non-profits and educational institutions. Recently, the Chorus has supported anti-bullying projects of the Gay-Straight Alliances of the College of the Desert and area public schools.

The Chorus has performed at glittering events such as the Steve Chase Awards Banquet, Evening Under the Stars, and the Equality California Awards. Guest performers have included opera singer Janet Hopkins, renowned dance company Tango Nacional Argentina, Florence Henderson and Leslie Jordan. There have also been memorable joint concerts with other GALA (Gay and Lesbian Association) choruses such as the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles, the Gay Men’s Chorus of San Francisco, and Vox Femina. The chorus has participated yearly in community events such as the PRIDE Parade and Festival of Lights Parade.

The Chorus is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. It is governed by a fifteen-member, all-volunteer Board of Directors: seven who are musical performers with the Chorus and eight community members. We invite you to support us by attending our concerts or investing in the Chorus with your financial gifts. Contact us at www.psgmc.com or by USPS at PO Box 4082, Palm Springs, CA 92263.
